Riverside has two full school districts offering quality education to students from kindergarten to grade 12: 31 elementary schools, 6 middle schools, 6 high schools and 1 adult school make up the Riverside Unified School District, while 14 elementary schools (including two brand-new ones opening freshly for the 2007-2008 school year), 4 middle schools and 3 high schools make up the Alvord Unified School District, giving Riverside, CA a grand total of 61 pre-collegiate public schools to choose from. The AUSD is located in southwestern Riverside, around the Magnolia Ave exit from the Riverside Freeway (91) and mainly north of this point, though 6 of their schools are south of this intersection. The RUSD stretches over the rest of the Riverside region, but does not cross any borders of the AUSD.
Riverside also has two notable institutions of learning for specified student bodies: California School for the Deaf, Riverside (CSD-R) has been open since 1934 and focuses on education for students from grades 7 to 12 who are deaf or hard of hearing. Sherman Indian School for Native American tribal members teaches students from the 7th to the 12th grade as well, has been open since 1878.

These include University of California, Riverside, California Baptist University, La Sierra University, and Riverside Community College. The UCR, also known as the UC Riverside, has its basketball teams play their games at the Student Recreation Center located on its campus. For students looking for a facility more specialized in their field of choice, Riverside has numerous other post-high-school facilities. These include the Computer Education Institute - Riverside, the California Paramedical and Technical College, Sage College (formerly the California School of Court Reporting - Riverside), the Center for Employment Training - Riverside, the Riverside Air Service, the California Southern Law School, the Valley Hypnosis Center, the Southern California School of Massage, and the National Bartenders School.
